What to wear, what to wear?

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 by Management 2000

With the warm weather coming on I've been asked if there is any laws directing dress code.  There is no specific law addressing dress code however there are laws that indirectly affect dress code.  For instance Title VII of the Civil Rights Acts states that among other things, a person cannot be discriminated based on their religion.  As you probably know, there are certain religions that have hair, clothing and jewelry requirements and you must make allowances for those requirements.  There are a couple of exceptions. You do not have to make that allowance if:

1. That exception creates a hardship for the employer and/or;
2. Creates a safety hazard.

You should seek HR support when developing your dress code policy.  At Management 2000 we provide that service for our clients and assure they are setting their policies with HR Best Practices.  At Management 2000, we know you have a business to run.

What is your opinion of 'casual Friday'? What does this mean? Jeans and T-Shirts? Graphic Ts? Or does this mean blue jeans with a collar shirt tucked in? Is it ok to support your favorite sports team if they are playing on the weekend by wearing a jersey on Friday? Is this the same or different from someone who let's say is not a sports fan, but instead is a big D&D fan and wants to dress up as some wizard or warrior? Should we draw the line somewhere?

Casual Friday can be whatever you think is appropriate. Personally I feel that if your employees will still be interacting with customers that T-shirts etc... are not appropriate. I would recommend jeans and a collared shirt. If you do allow a T-shirt, you can limit what is acceptable - you can say sports teams only if you choose. You have the right to determine what is acceptable in the workplace.
