A Clean Worksite Is A Safe Worksite

Monday, November 1, 2010 by SAFETY
Maintaining good housekeeping is an important part of the overall job of supervision.
There are a number of advantages to having a clean and orderly work-site, including: avoidance of accidents, better fire prevention, improved health of employees, and increased worker efficiency and morale.
Avoidance of accidents is the major goal of most companies. That occasional piece of scrap or wet spot on the floor can cause slip, trip and fall hazards. Cluttered aisles and congested work areas can also add to the dangers. A thorough and successful housekeeping plan can eliminate alot of hazards in the workplace, it makes good sense for every business to have one.
Housekeeping can appear to be a never ending and thankless job, but if there is to much dirt and debris, and disorder are allowed to accumulate, this can lead to production problems by increased accidents, absenteeism, and turn over. Typically you will find the businesses that have good housekeeping in place, have very competent supervisors and an extremely low accident rate.

A SIMPLE DEVICE, OR IS IT?

Monday, October 25, 2010 by SAFETY
Ladders are a simple device for safe climbing, and that may be their biggest fault. Workers using them tend to mistake simplicity for harmlessness, forgetting precautions of rules and proper use. That kind of mistake causes thousands of accidents and disabling injuries every year. Most accidents with straight ladders are caused by the ladder skidding or slipping. This is easy enough to prevent. Equip each ladder with a non- slip base, like safety feet, for example, or block the base of the ladder.
Lashing the ladder is another precaution against its moving or slipping, and to make sure the lashing is there when needed, permanently attach a short length of rope to a side rail. Also, make sure the ladder is placed at a safe angle so the distance from the wall to the base of the ladder is about one-fourth the distance from the base to the ladders top support.
When you are setting up a ladder, make sure the footing is level and that the ladder rests on a firm platform. Lean the ladder against something solid and unmovable, Not against a window sash or a glass surface. Also make sure the top of the ladder exceeds three feet or more above the surface in which you intend to climb.
If all of these precautions are followed, and if the ladder is in good condition and is the right one for the job, then a simple device for climbing is a safe one too.

SCAFFOLDING PLANKING

Thursday, August 26, 2010 by SAFETY
We can have the best tubular steel scaffolding or any other work platform in existence today, and it would be no safer than the weakest scaffold plank on the work deck. Therefore,if we are to have safety on the job, we must excesses care in the selection and use of the scaffolding planking.
Lets see what constitutes Good scaffolding plank and how it should be used. The plank should be no less then 2x10 inches (nominal size). It should be rough-dressed, seasoned, strained grained, free from large, loose or dead knots, and obviously free from groups of knots. Check for splits and any other defect tending to decrease the structural strength.
Another very important step is always field test the plank before live-load use. A good and practical method is to lay the plank across two concrete blocks or any other blocking material. Make sure the span is equal to or greater than the span of the scaffold when in use. Two workers should stand in the middle of the plank ( it is not necessary to jump up and down). A plank that cracks, splits or otherwise does not perform in an acceptable manner must be discarded.
After field testing has been completed, the plank is then placed on the scaffold. This brings up another important phase: securing the plank to the scaffold to prevent movement and slipping. Where there is a fixed distance to span, such as in tubular steel scaffolding, a good way to prevent slippage is to install cleats. If this isn't practical or becomes necessary to overlay planks, the securing should be down by wiring after the plank has been properly placed.
Last and equally important is to take care of the piece of lumber as if your life depends on it, because in most cases it does.

"BUT WHAT CAN I DO?"

Thursday, August 26, 2010 by SAFETY
"What can I do about accident prevention, I only work here". Well we all work here and presumably we all want our work area to be safe and healthy as possible. It really has to do with being continuously alert to possible hazards and following safe work practices and procedures. Be sure to always:
  • Know your job
  • Practice good housekeeping
  • Dress safely for work
  • Always use the proper ppe for the job
  • Report all accidents and near misses
These are just a few things that you as an employee can do to ensure that you and the people around you practice safe work procedures.

Dont Let Training Aids Control Your Presentations

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 by SAFETY
Whatever training aid you choose for your presentations, don't let it steal your show. For example, instead of repeating whats on a PowerPoint slide, use the slide to only reinforce an important point. Go where the class takes you. Instructors who are not very familiar with their topic tend to use the presentation tool as a crutch. They don't pay attention to the class dynamics, such as dealing with questions as they arise. The worst thing a presenter can say is, " hold on to that question and we will address it later". If someone has a question it is imperative that you make every effort to answer it immediately, by doing so you are not only showing your knowledge for the subject, but you are helping someone learn, that is what the presentation is intended to do.
If you choose not to answer the question right away you are creating a needless Human Resource Issue.
